How Loud Is a Concert?

NIDCD publishes 94 to 110 dBA for concerts. At the bottom of that range an hour spends a whole day's allowance; at the top, minutes do. What the figures say and what to do with them.

NIDCD publishes concerts at 94–110 dBANIDCD, and the width of that range is the whole story.

At the bottom of it, one hour is a full day's allowance on the NIOSH model. At the top, a couple of minutes is. Two gigs that are both "a concert" can differ by a factor of a hundred in what they cost, and nothing about standing in the room tells you which one you are at.

Every entry in that list is somewhere people go on purpose, repeatedly, for hours. That is what separates this end of the scale from an industrial one: the exposure is voluntary, unmeasured, and nobody hands you protection at the door.

The rough field check up here is shouting. At 95 dBA you have to shout to be heard by someone three feet awayNIOSH. Every venue in this band clears that easily, which is why the check stops being useful once you are inside one — it tells you that you are above 95, not how far above.

The published table is the answer, and it is shorter than people expect. Sixty minutes at 94 dBA reaches the whole daily dose. Fifteen minutes at 100 dBA does the sameNIOSH.

A support act, a headline set and the walk out is two to three hours. At the bottom of NIDCD's published band that is two to three times the allowance; at the top it is far more than that, because the allowed time halves for every 3 dBNIOSH. 100 decibels goes through what that end of the scale costs in detail.

One caveat, stated properly rather than buried. The limit those durations come from is occupational, and NIOSH says plainly that it is not a recommendation for noise in the general environmentNIOSH. Borrowing it for a gig understates rather than overstates the problem: a worker at that level has protection issued and a shift that ends, and someone at a venue has neither.

Where you stand changes the number

More than anything else you control.

Level falls with distance from the source, so the difference between the barrier and the back of the room is real and often large. It is also the cheapest intervention available: moving is free, takes thirty seconds, and does more than most of the things people try instead.

Position matters in other ways too. Directly in front of a speaker stack is not the same as off to one side at the same distance, and standing next to the desk — where the engineer is mixing — is usually one of the more sensible places in a room, for exactly the reason you would guess.

None of that is a figure this page can publish for your venue, and anyone offering one is guessing. It is a reason to move rather than a number to plan around.

What earplugs actually change

They lower the level reaching your ear, which on this scale buys back time faster than it feels like it should. Because the allowed time doubles for every 3 dB reductionNIOSH, even a modest reduction converts a set you could not sit through into one you can.

How much any particular pair reduces is printed on the packet, and this page is not going to invent a figure for it — the rating is on the product for the same reason the published dB values on this site all carry a source.

The practical point is that earplugs at a concert are not an all-or-nothing decision. Wearing them for the loudest half hour rather than not at all changes the day's total by more than most people assume, and the argument for them is arithmetic rather than caution.

Ringing ears afterwards

The common experience after a gig is muffled hearing and ringing that fades over a day or so. It is worth knowing what that is and what it is not.

It is not proof that permanent damage occurred, and it is not proof that none did. What it is, unambiguously, is a signal that the exposure was well past the point where the published guidance would have asked for protection — NIOSH's advice outside a workplace is to take precautions whenever a level reaches 85 dB(A) or higherNIOSH, and a concert is published at least nine decibels above thatNIDCD.

The mechanism that matters is repetition. NIOSH is explicit that most noise-induced hearing loss is accumulated damage from repeated exposures rather than a single event, and that the risk depends on how loud, how long, how much rest the ears get in between, and on the listenerNIOSH. One gig a year and one gig a week are different propositions, and the second one is the shape most people's concert-going actually has.

That last factor — rest between exposures — is the one nobody plans for and the easiest to act on. A loud night followed by a quiet day is a different proposition from a loud night followed by a commute in headphones.

A festival is a different question

A single set is one calculation. A festival is a day, and the day is what the model is about.

Eight hours on site is not eight hours at the front of the main stage, and the quiet parts genuinely count as quiet — the arithmetic adds each period's share of its own allowance rather than treating the loudest moment as the whole dayNIOSH. That means the time spent away from the stages is doing real work, and it is the reason a festival can be a smaller total than an evening in a small loud room.

It also means the decisions that move the number are about where you spend the loud hours rather than whether you attend. Two sets at the barrier and the rest of the day at the back is a different day from six hours at the front, and only one of them requires giving anything up.

Checking a venue yourself

The online decibel meter on this site runs in the browser, which means it is available at a gig without planning ahead. Two things to know before trusting what it shows.

It is an uncalibrated estimate: sound apps have been found to scatter by roughly ±10 dB against a reference instrumentKardous & Shaw, and at this end of the scale ten decibels is a factor of ten in allowed time.

And a phone input has limited headroom. Somewhere around 100 to 105 dB it runs out, and past that the number stops climbing while the room keeps going. A reading that flattens out at a loud venue should be read as at least that, never as exactly that. The meter warns when the input looks like it is clipping, which is the signal that you have left the range it can see.

So use it as a signal rather than a plan: a reading near a hundred means act, not calculate.
