How Loud Is a Vacuum Cleaner?

NIOSH publishes 85 to 90 dBA for a vacuum cleaner — the same band as a lawn mower and power tools. Why a household appliance sits at the hearing-guidance threshold, and what that does and does not mean.

NIOSH puts a vacuum cleaner at 85–90 dBANIOSH, which is the single most surprising row in the published record.

It is the same band as a lawn mower, power tools and a printing pressNIOSH. A household appliance that lives in a cupboard is published at the level where every hearing-health document starts paying attention — and it is met far more often than any of the machines it shares the band with.

Reading that list is the fastest way to recalibrate an intuition about noise. The mental category of "loud machine" contains the mower and the power tools and excludes the vacuum, and the published figures do not agree.

The field check applies here too: at 85 dBA you generally have to raise your voice to be heard by someone three feet awayNIOSH. Most people do exactly that while vacuuming without ever noticing they are doing it.

Does it matter?

Mostly not, and for a reason worth being precise about: duration.

The NIOSH model allows eight hours at 85 dBANIOSH. Vacuuming a house is twenty minutes. Even at the top of the published band, where the allowance is a fraction of the day because the allowed time halves for every 3 dB increaseNIOSH, a normal clean uses a small share of it.

So the honest answer to "is my vacuum damaging my hearing" is almost certainly not, and the reason is the clock rather than the level. That distinction is the whole subject of this site, and the vacuum is its clearest everyday example: a level that would matter enormously over a shift matters very little over twenty minutes.

The exception is anyone who vacuums professionally. Cleaning staff working through a building are much closer to the case the occupational limit was written for — and NIOSH is explicit that the limit assumes the other sixteen hours of the day are spent somewhere quieterNIOSH, which a full shift of it does not provide.

Why yours might be quieter than the published band

Published figures are for a category, and the category has moved.

The band covers everything from an old cylinder machine with a high-speed universal motor to a modern unit designed with noise in mind, and nobody publishes a figure per model. Two things move a real reading most:

Where the motor is, and where you are. A canister machine on the floor and a stick vacuum held at waist height put the source at different distances from your ears, and distance moves the number more than most design differences do.

The floor. Hard floors and bare rooms reflect; carpet and soft furnishing absorb. The same machine in a tiled kitchen and a carpeted bedroom is not the same reading, which is one reason published values come as ranges.

If a manufacturer publishes a figure for your model, it will usually have been taken under conditions the label does not describe. It is a comparison between models rather than a prediction of your room.

Checking yours

You can measure sound in your browser rather than guess: hold the phone at head height while the machine runs, let it settle, and read where the number sits.

Expect an uncalibrated estimate. Sound apps have been found to scatter by roughly ±10 dB against a reference instrumentKardous & Shaw, and a browser has less to work with than a native app. As always, the comparison is worth more than the absolute figure — your old machine against your new one, or the same machine on carpet and on tile, are questions an estimate answers well.

For a reference point at the other end: sound at or below 70 decibels is unlikely to cause hearing loss however long it lastsNIDCD, and 70 decibels is roughly where a conversation sits. A vacuum you can talk over is a different machine from the published band.

The thing that actually gets people

Not the vacuum. The headphones worn to drown it out.

Volume gets set against the background, so a machine at 85 dBA pushes whatever you are listening to well above that — and NIDCD publishes headphones at maximum volume in the same 94–110 dBA band as a concertNIDCD. Twenty minutes at the vacuum's level is a small share of a day. Twenty minutes at concert level is not, and the allowed time halves for every 3 dB above the criterionNIOSH.

The fix is not willpower. It is removing the background: isolating headphones let you hear the same thing at a much lower level, because the noise being competed with is gone. That is an argument about exposure rather than about sound quality, and it applies to any noisy chore, not only this one.

What the rest of the household hears

Less than you do, and it matters less for the same reason.

The published band describes the level near the machine. Someone in the next room is hearing a considerably lower figure, over the same twenty minutes, and neither the level nor the duration puts them anywhere near the territory the guidance is about.

Where it does matter is sleep and speech rather than hearing — a vacuum running while someone is on a call or a child is napping is a real complaint about a real thing, and it is not a decibel problem so much as a timing one. The figures on this page have nothing useful to say about it, and pretending otherwise is how noise arguments go wrong.

Is a quieter vacuum worth buying

On hearing grounds, for a domestic user, no — the durations are too short for the difference to change anything the model on this page can see.

On every other ground, possibly. Being able to hold a conversation, hear a doorbell, or clean without the room becoming unusable for anyone else is worth something, and none of it needs a hearing-risk justification to be a reasonable thing to want. It is worth separating the two arguments, because conflating them is how a comfort purchase gets sold as a safety one.

If you do compare models, compare them yourself in your own rooms rather than by label. Same spot, same floor, same distance, same device — the differences between machines are well inside what a consistent set of readings can show, even when the absolute figures are not trustworthy.

What is actually worth doing

Very little, for a domestic user, and that is a legitimate conclusion rather than a shrug.

If it bothers you, a quieter machine is a comfort purchase rather than a hearing-protection one at these durations. If you clean professionally, or if you vacuum in long stretches, treat it the way you would any other 85 dBA task: protection is cheap, and NIOSH's own advice outside the workplace is to take precautions whenever a readout shows 85 dB(A) or higherNIOSH.

And if the vacuum surprised you, the useful takeaway is not about vacuums. It is that the intuition that sorts sounds into safe and dangerous by how unpleasant they are does not track the published figures — which is why the level and the duration both have to be looked at rather than felt.
