How Loud Is 85 Decibels?
85 dBA is the line every hearing-health agency draws, and it is quieter than most people expect. What it sounds like, how long it is safe, and why the answer is a pair of numbers rather than one.
Eighty-five decibels is not loud in the way people imagine a dangerous sound to be. It is a lawn mower. It is a vacuum cleaner in a small room. Nobody covers their ears at 85 dBA, and that is exactly why it is the number every hearing agency picks: it is the level at which damage becomes a question of duration rather than of shock.
NIOSH set its recommended limit there — 85 decibels, A-weighted, averaged over an eight-hour day — and treats exposures at or above it as hazardousNIOSH.
What sits at 85 decibels
These are the everyday sources NIOSH puts in the 85 to 90 dBA bandNIOSH. None of them is an unusual event. Most people meet at least one in an ordinary week, and meet it for longer than they would guess.
There is also a field test that needs nothing but another person. At 85 dBA you generally have to raise your voice to be heard by someone three feet awayNIOSH. At 95 dBA you have to shoutNIOSH. If a room forces your voice up and you are still there twenty minutes later, you are in the territory this page is about — no equipment required to know it.
For contrast: normal conversation runs 60–70 dBANIDCD. The gap from there to 85 sounds modest. It is not. Every 10 dB is ten times the sound energy, so 85 dBA carries something like thirty times the energy of a conversation at 70. The ear compresses that range, which is what makes the decibel scale so easy to underestimate.
How long 85 decibels is safe
This is the half of the question that actually decides the answer, and it is the half most pages skip. Eighty-five dBA is safe for eight hours. That is not a figure this page derives — it is the definition of the limit: eight hours at 85 dBA is 100% of the daily noise dose NIOSH allowsNIOSH.
Go above it and the allowance falls fast, because sound energy doubles every 3 dB and the permitted time halves with itNIOSH.

Read that table twice. Eighty-eight decibels — a difference most people cannot hear as a change at all — costs four of your eight hours. By the time you reach 100 decibels, a quarter of an hour has spent the entire day.
Is 85 dB dangerous?
Not in the sense of a single moment doing harm. NIOSH is clear that most noise-induced hearing loss is the accumulated result of repeated exposures rather than one event, and that the risk depends on how loud the sound is, how long you listen to it, how much rest your ears get between exposures, and on the listener themselvesNIOSH.
So the honest answer has a shape rather than a value. An hour at 85 dBA on a Saturday is not a problem. Eight hours a day, five days a week, for years, is the exposure the limit was built around: NIOSH set the REL to protect workers from hearing loss substantial enough to make speech hard to follow, over a forty-year working careerNIOSH.
One caveat belongs here rather than in the small print. The limit is occupational. NIOSH says plainly that it is not a recommendation for noise in the general environment, and that it assumes the other sixteen hours of the day are spent somewhere quieterNIOSH. A day built out of a concert, a power tool and a commute does not get those quiet sixteen hours, so borrowing the workplace figure for it understates the total rather than overstating it.
What NIOSH does recommend for the rest of us is simpler than a calculation: if a readout shows 85 dB(A) or higher, take precautions — move away from the source, turn it down, or put something between it and your earsNIOSH.
How many decibels is too loud?
This is the question people actually type, and it has no single-number answer, which is why so many pages give a confident wrong one.
Too loud is a pair: a level and a duration. Ninety-four decibels for an hour and 85 for eight hours are the same exposure — they spend the identical allowanceNIOSH. Anyone who tells you a number without asking how long you will be there has answered a different question.
If you want one figure to carry around anyway, 85 is the right one, for a reason that has nothing to do with arithmetic. It is the level at which the published guidance changes character — below it, the agencies talk about annoyance and sleep; at and above it, they talk about hearing loss. That is a real boundary in the literature, not a round number someone picked.
Why 85 and not 90
American guidance splits at exactly this point, and the split catches people out. One agency recommends 85 dBA and halves the allowed time for every 3 dB above itNIOSH. Another enforces a higher figure with a slower exchange rate, because an enforceable standard has to account for what was feasible when it was written, and a health recommendation does not.
They disagree, both are current, and a level that clears one can fail the other. Which one applies to a given workplace is a question about regulation rather than about hearing, and it belongs with the NIOSH recommended exposure limit and its enforceable counterpart rather than on a page about what 85 sounds like.
Checking the room you are in

Two things about the figure it gives you. It is an uncalibrated estimate, and smartphone sound apps have been found to scatter by roughly ±10 dB against a reference instrumentKardous & Shaw. That band is wide enough to matter here, because 10 dB is a factor of ten in allowed time. What it is good for is the comparison: telling an 85 dBA room from a 60 dBA one is well inside what an estimate can do, and that is the question most people have. It is not an IEC 61672 result and must not be used for an occupational, legal, or medical decision.
The reading also wants to be an average rather than a peak. A room that touches 85 for a second when a door slams is not an 85 dBA room. Let the meter run and watch where the number sits.
What 85 decibels is not
It is not a threshold of pain, and it is not the level at which damage begins. Both readings are common and both are wrong in a way that matters. Damage is not a switch that flips at a level; it is an accumulation whose rate depends on how loud the sound is and how long it goes onNIOSH. Eighty-five is simply the level at which the accumulation becomes fast enough that a normal working day reaches the whole allowance.
It is also not a legal line for most people. The recommended limit is a health recommendation, not an enforceable standardNIOSH, and nothing on this page establishes whether any particular room complies with anything. What it establishes is what the level costs in time, which is the part you can act on.
Eight hours at 85 is not eight hours of your day
Real exposure is rarely one flat level for one long stretch, and the dose model handles that better than a single figure can. Each period costs the share of its own allowance that it uses, and the shares add upNIOSH. Two hours at 85 dBA is a quarter of the day, not a quarter of a problem — and the remaining six hours are only free if they are genuinely quieter.
This is also why a loud few minutes can matter more than a long moderate stretch. Fifteen minutes at 100 dBA and eight hours at 85 dBA are the same exposure by this arithmeticNIOSH. The short one feels like an event and the long one feels like a background condition, but the day does not distinguish between them. If you are trying to work out whether a week is a problem, the sum is the thing to look at, and the loudest single moment usually is not.
Where 85 sits on the scale
Eighty-five is a landmark, not a wall. Below it, the same sounds get talked about in terms of annoyance and interrupted sleep rather than damage: sound at or below 70 decibels is not expected to damage hearing however long you sit in itNIDCD. Above it the clock runs faster with every step, and by 100 decibels the daily allowance is gone in a quarter of an hourNIOSH.
